A Review: Marc Kushner’s TED Talk

Not long ago, a GoHaus team member sent around a TED talk from Marc Kushner about the future of architecture in a world of digital media and flooring design. If you have time to watch his TED talk, please do. It’s a great one. If not, I got some cliff notes for you:

  • Architecture isn’t simply about making buildings; it’s about the emotions you feel about a space. A “visceral emotional connection,” as Kushner puts it.
  • Architecture works on a pendulum – innovation on one side and symbolism on the other.
  • Architectural design symbols are easy because we all have an association with them. Therefore, architects know how the general public will react to these symbols (think, the ancient Greek columns that influenced buildings like The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC)
  • Digital media and advancing communication now allows instant feedback on architectural design.
  • Kushner’s theory: when you apply media to the pendulum, it blurs the lines between innovation and symbols.
  • We’re able to instantly react and share our experience with a building, even before it’s made, if given the opportunity.

Receiving this TED talk when we did was perfect timing. We were in the midst of creating our brand platform. We were talking about positioning statements, values, culture, taglines and more!

Then, we watched this TED Talk. And, Marc said: “It doesn’t matter how we build. It matters what we build.”

And, you know what? It’s so true! We don’t just want to build for the sake of building; we want to build with purpose, vision and emotion. This really inspired us to stand behind and own what has always been at our core – experience and innovation. We want every person to love his or her space and think differently about it.

We hope this inspires you to take charge of your space and create what feels right, comfortable, beautiful, open, etc. You’re going to have a connection with that space for a long time. To Marc’s point, communication today (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc) lets us get instant feedback if we seek it. So, if you’re questioning that light fixture or floor color, take a picture and share it! See what your friends think. But, most of all, create an experience for yourself that gives you joy every time you walk in your new space. Check out GoHaus for all your designer flooring needs.
